Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Spectralism: Movement for the Ages
"While trying to find a clip of a Nancarrow piece realized by acoustic instruments, I came across this great piece of Jim Tenney's, Spectral Canon - it's got the rhythmic and spectral aspects both working. "

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Chant Music
"Thanks Bruce. I love everything she does. Nice to see some clips that don't show bombings (for a long time the only one on YouTube showed visuals of places being bombed). I was thrilled a few years ago when John Schaeffer paired one of her…"

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Chant Music
"I agree about the chant part, but find western chant pretty sterile (but still beautiful). When Pope Gregory codified chant, it was useful, but the emphasis changed from the ear to the eye, and vocal inflections and rhythmic play got smoothed out. I…"

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Mary Jane Leach - Xantippe's Rebuke
"I'm not sure what you mean by the differences between tape overlays and multiplicity. They seem like the same thing to me. Bare Bones, 4BC, and Trio for Duo are pieces in which each part is equal and should be done all live or all on tape. Feu…"

Mary Jane Leach replied to Dave Seidel's discussion New piece: Gyre
"Well, it would really change the piece, but you could have fun panning.:-) "

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Mary Jane Leach - Xantippe's Rebuke
"The first 6 pieces on this playlist really work with sound phenomena, as well as Pipe Dreams in a slightly different way."

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Mary Jane Leach - Xantippe's Rebuke
"Hmm, as an addendum, in an early piece I wrote to perform myself, I'd envisioned me singing three minute segments without having to take a breath. :-) After that, I've always used breath as an organizing principle. That, coupled with…"

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Mary Jane Leach - Xantippe's Rebuke
"Thanks, guys. To answer: yes, the sound phenomena that occur are not random. I do extensive studies for each piece like this (Feu de Joie for 7 bassoons uses a similar concept). I also work with panning, because that affects how the sounds interact.…"

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Spectralism: Movement for the Ages
"Just one general comment. While Wikipedia can be useful for objective information, I'd be wary of relying on it for subjective and analytical information, especially with fields or developments that are recent. For instance, the inclusion of…"

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Stockhausen Stimmung
"Hmm, I don't think it's in just intonation. One of the original singers is a friend of mine - I could check with her, but I don't think it's in JI."

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Spectralism: Movement for the Ages
"Actually, 4BC is for 4 bass clarinets. Feu de Joie is for 7 bassoons. Xantippe's Rebuke is for 9 oboes. Trio for Duo is for 2 voices and 2 alto flutes, with the voice (me) sounding like the alto flute."

Mary Jane Leach replied to Michael Waller's discussion Spectralism: Movement for the Ages
"I only have examples of my music on my site, and I only seem to have excerpts on it. However, if you go to my myspace and net new music pages, you can find examples of complete pieces. 4BC, Trio for Duo, Feu de Joie, and Xantippe's Rebuke all…"
